CWHfH's next home will be built at 1008 Franklin Street in Stevens Point. Check out on Construction Update and Construction Status pages. The current Habitat home is being
built at 2816 Rice Street for our
Our next work day will be Friday September 24th from 12:30 until 4:00 or 4:30, then Saturday September 25th from 9:00 until 4:30. From now on we will usually be working Fridays along with Saturdays, if you have a question please email the coordinator. On September 10th and 11th we built most of the exterior walls for the lower level. We will complete those walls, build interior load bearing walls and hopefully begin with floor joists on the 17th and 18th. On September 17th and 18th we completed the first level exterior walls, finished the garage front wall, finished the load bearing walls, placed the rim joist and floor joists, and began laying the floor decking. The week of September 20th saw the PJ volunteers finish the floor decking. On September 24th and 25th the landing for the front door was placed and the south wall erected. The week of September 27th saw the PJ crew sheath the south wall, begin construction of the north wall, and erect the north wall. On October 1st and 2nd we had a good group of volunteers from UWSP and a new possible hard core member, thanks Mike! The joists were placed above the garage, the west wall was constructed, the floor decking was placed above the garage, and the east wall was built. Next Friday and Saturday we hope to finish all the exterior walls and prepare to place the roof trusses. The week of October 4th saw the exterior walls nearly completed, several tons of fill moved from the front to the back, and the bracing of the joists completed. The roof trusses are scheduled for delivery on Wednesday October 13th and should be placed on next Friday and Saturday. On the 9th, aside from our hardcore UWSP crew, the Rotaract Club had a great crew on site also. The roof trusses were delivered Wednesday October 13th, and they will be placed on Saturday the 16th. Thanks to Dave Rasmussen, our PJ Jacobs liaison, our backs will be saved as Dave, working with Ellis Stone Construction, has a crane coming to lift the trusses to the roof. Way to go Dave, and thank you Ellis Stone. The weekend of October 16th, and October 23rd saw the roof trusses placed by the crane and the sheeting of the roof initiated. Unfortunately the weather was not cooperative the 22nd or 23rd with rain and thunderstorms rumbling around. The weekend of October 30th will see work on the roof sheeting, hurricane clips and hopefully roofing felt. The UWSP Women's Basketball team will be volunteering Saturday and we hope to get a lot accomplished. Saturday the 30th was cold and wet. The first order of business was strategy (read waiting for the rain to stop). The rained did stop, but not exactly on schedule. But by 10:30, coach Shirley Egner and the Pointer Women arrived, and after a safety briefing they got to work. By days end, the hurricane clips were on, the main roof was sheeted, and the roofing felt was down. It was a rotten day weather wise, but because of the spirit and commitment of the volunteers, the task of getting the main roof on was completed. Working with all these great volunteers every week, you take for granted how special each one is. Thank you every one!! On Friday November 5th and Saturday November 6th, we hope to have a group from Steiner Hall who will finish the roof above the garage and wrap the house in Tyvek. The shingling will start that weekend too, we have a roofer who is volunteering his services. On Friday November 5th, we had the A.C.T group and the Women's Resource Center from UWSP pitching in. On Friday and Saturday we finished the prep work on the roof, completed the sheathing, and nearly finished the Tyvek wrap. The lower level was cleaned up, a light string was hung and the stairs to the lower level finished. Also foam was placed along the west and north lower walls. With the completion of the back door the house is "dry". The roofer will complete the shingles on Monday or Tuesday. Friday the 12th and Saturday the 13th will see us complete the Tyvek, install the lower level windows, and begin interior walls. The week of November 8th the roofer finished the shingles. The weekend of the 12th and 13th saw a light construction crew. The stairs at the front door were completed, as well as the interior walls and insulation that was needed for the plumber. We expect the plumber and electrician in within the next two weeks. Also on Saturday a crew went to Home Furnishing in Stevens Point. Home Furnishings is going out of business and donated several rolls of vinyl, carpeting and pad.....thank you! On the 19th and 20th we will continue with interior walls and windows. The plumbers were in the week of the 15th and finished roughing in the plumbing. The PJ students constructed and erected some interior walls and placed the vents and insulation at the soffits. We had a great group from UWSP on Saturday including a couple hard cores, some Interior Architecture students, and a group of administrators from Residential Living, and Student Involvement and Employment. We completed framing the bathroom, utility room and laundry room in the lower level, built some dynamite shelves in the garage and emptied the trailer, in preparation for its repair, (dang, all the stuff is so organized now I can’t find a thing…..), finished with the Tyvek (in the wind, one intrepid volunteer forgot to let go of the Tyvek and was last seen sailing over McDill Pond), and we placed a couple windows. We are all taking next Friday and Saturday off, and I am authorized to double everyone’s pay for the holiday ( 2 x 0 =??). With all kidding aside, the feeling we all have at the end of the day, is all the pay we need. Enjoy Thanksgiving, and give thanks for all your blessings. December 3rd and 4th the tasks we toiled at included a great spaghetti lunch from our Family Partners (tough work, but great if you can get it), finishing the assembly of the lower level and main level walls, installation of most of the windows, finishing the exterior foam, tweaking the stairs, and completing the placement of the rafter vents. The home is really starting to take shape. The electricians will be in this week or next, so insulation and placement of the rest of the windows will be the next order of business. Then it is time to hang drywall. Come join the fun! December 10th and 11th we found the electricians had finished the rough-in upstairs so the drywall was delivered through the opening for the "big window" and we got to work. Some of us thought we didn't need the drywall lift, the rest of us figured out it was a back-saver. Actually the pile of drywall was in the way for the lift, otherwise we ALWAYS use it. We completed hanging all the ceiling drywall on the main level save for the family room and bathroom. We placed the "big window" in the living room, the task was made fairly easy because of our great crew of volunteers. Michelle and Israel provided the crew with a great hot lunch served up in their kitchen. Next weekend we will continue with hanging the drywall, then will take the next two weekends off. This picture is a little blurry, think of it as the haze of a dream coming true, check out these kids, enough said. The home is really starting to take shape. This last week Dave and the PJ kids got the family room ceiling drywall up, a BIG help. This weekend, December 17th and 18th, we insulated the main floor walls, placed the vapor barrier and hung all the dry wall on the main level except for the family room. What a difference the dry wall makes. AND what a difference the small furnace Bob put in makes, it was a balmy 50 degrees inside this weekend, just right for working. We will take the next two weekends off and will return to work on Friday January 7th, and Saturday January 8th. Looks like we will be insulating the lower level walls and then beginning to hang the dry wall downstairs. Merry Christmas! On Friday January 7th we unloaded a whole bunch of dry wall and began hanging it on the lower level ceiling. On Saturday we continued hanging the ceiling, had a great lunch of home made potato salad and grilled brats (thank you Michelle and Israel), and prepared the lower level walls to receive the foam insulation. The PJ gang worked on the main level and nearly have the dry wall completed. The weekend of the 14th we will continue with the insulation and dry wall and will have the Rotary Club volunteering. We had a good crew in from the Rotary Club of Greater Portage County on Saturday January 15th. We spent the day dry walling and insulating. We finished over half of the dry wall in the lower level, and only one or two sheets remain to be placed on the main level. It was a cold weekend, but our temporary furnace kept us warm. This coming Friday and Saturday we will continue with the dry walling and should be close to completing it by the end of the day Saturday. Due to the world wide shortage of dry wall our shipment did not make it in this week, so the weekend of January 28th and 29th we will continue with dry walling the lower level. Actually, we just didn’t get the load in, has nothing to do with a shortage but it makes a good story……………. So we caulked windows and installed dry wall returns around the windows on the main level, got the lower bathroom all ready to dry wall, and finished insulating the lower level block walls and installed the front door. The hydronic boiler was installed, but is not yet operational. We will hit it hard with the dry wall January 28th and 29th. On the weekend of the 28th and 29th we placed the final window and continued with the drywall. We had a great group of volunteers....THANKS!! Lunch as usual was an anticipated break. Israel was the picture of concentration, and also an artist. And he was the center of attraction. We all rallied, put our heads together and got the job done. The following week saw the hardcores working over time, and the HUGE milestone of finishing hanging the dry wall, and the home readied for the mudders was accomplished February 4th and 5th.........WAY TO GO!! We are taking a well deserved break the weekend of February 11th and 12th. The weekend of February 18th and 19th we will begin hanging interior doors and placing trim, and the house will be well on its way to looking like a home. As the spraying of the dry wall was still being completed, and I am telling you the home looks great, we only worked on February 18th. The dry wall in the garage was all hung, and the donated kitchen cabinets were brought from storage to the house. This coming weekend we will get to work on the trim and the interior doors. On February 25th we hung the upper kitchen cabinets and put the lower cabinets in order. The cabinets were donated and look great! Several of the high points of my afternoon were the doughnuts Michelle and Israel brought.....so many doughnuts, so little time.........Saturday the 26th found us hanging doors with the help of a crew from Hansen Hall. We were able to hang and trim 11 doors, a good day's work. Did I mention the doughnuts? March 4th and 5th will find us continuing with the interior doors. The next major project after that will be the soffit and siding. On the 4th and 5th we essentially finished the interior doors having hung and trimmed 6 doors and trimmed the 3 left over from last weekend. We also varnished some luan plywood to be used as a toe board along the stairs, cleaned out the garage and placed new shelving, and put treads and risers on the back stairs. Saturday morning we picked up a large load of trim that was donated by Terry Dalsky of Shannon Custom Homes, Designers and Builders, thanks! During the week the electricians did most of their finish work, and the PJ crew started on the window sills. On March 11th and 12th we will continue with the stairs and consider the fascia and soffit. Zow. Can you say “staining and varnishing machines” ???? On March 11th and 12th we had a great group of volunteers from the UWSP Inter Greek Council and that crew, like all our volunteers, really got the job done. A couple brushes, some stain, some varnish, and a couple thousand board feet (or did it just SEEM like that much) of trim, and bud da bing it was done, thank you. We also finished the stairs (no he is NOT nailing his foot!!), placed a few more window sills, trimmed the dining room window, and fine tuned the exterior doors. It won’t be long and we will start on the siding. As you all know, there is plenty of siding to do so we continue to need your help. And please remember we start our next build as soon as the weather allows, so let’s keep on keeping on. We are not working Good Friday or that Saturday, so take a well deserved break and enjoy Easter. Count your blessings, and continue to give of yourself. We are making a difference, right here in our own backyard. Thank you. March 18th and 19th, blizzard or no, intrepid Habitat volunteers were hard at work this weekend. Friday we were on the “tweak” patrol inside (read trying to keep from working outside). A few squeaks in the floor were squelched and two access holes for a shorted wire were patched. Then it was out to brave the elements and place starter strips and corner posts for the vinyl siding. Other than momentarily losing Jack in a white out, mission accomplished. Saturday morning, Israel and the kids did yeoman work in shoveling out the parking area and a strip around the house. Donning mukluks and snowshoes the crew set in on the task of siding. Our supplies ran out before our enthusiasm and we got a good start on the siding on the south side. Check out how straight this stuff is, nice job! Again, we are taking Easter weekend off. When we return the following weekend we will be hard at work on soffit and fascia and siding. Spring is in the air, sooner or later the snow really is going to go away, or so I am told.
Two weeks ago it was
parkas and hand warmers, this weekend it was Hawaiian Tropic and
shorts, almost any way. Here is the progress from April 1st and
2nd. A crew from
RotarAct at UWSP pitched in. OK, lets see………………………….. I leave town for a day and a TON of progress is made. Is it just me, or does it sound like there is a lesson to be learned to you too?We had a great crew from UWSP on Friday the 8th (and the Belt’s ice-cream was good too!) and we finished preparing all but one of the windows for siding. We also finished about ¾ of the siding on the south side of the house. The PJ crew did a great job of getting most of the soffit done during the week. OK. Then I don’t go in on Saturday and all of the sudden the west side is COMPLETELY sided, the north side is started, the western part of the family room is ready for siding, there is a rumor the fridge (complements of Whirlpool) was hefted into place, and who knows what all! Way to go! We will keep at the siding this next weekend and probably start placing some cabinets (unless the crew got THAT done too!). Even as we speak (ok read) the blueprints are being drawn for our next home. Once the permits are pulled we will dig the hole at Third and Franklin on the “Nort” side and off we go. Friday the 15th we finished siding the south side, and did about half of the north side. Saturday we piled the scaffolding up high and started and finished the siding on the east side, got within striking distance of finishing the north side, installed more soffit and fascia, and installed the kitchen cabinets. More flooring has been installed and soon it will be time to start the finish trim work. The countertops will be delivered soon and we will install them as they arrive. Things are moving quickly, but there is still plenty to do! Well, the wind tried to blow us off the ladders a few times this weekend, but we prevailed. We had a good group in from UWSP in support of the “Hunger Clean-Up” weekend, and we put them to work. Half of them attacked the siding on the west side of the family room, the other half jumped in on siding the entry way, and before long everything has been sided except the roadside of the garage. The PJ crew will get a good lick in on that during the week, and it will be finished next weekend. One of our volunteers, who works in siding as a trade, showed us how to bend the aluminum to wrap the windows, and by the end of Saturday he had half of the windows finished. We will work on the remaining windows, and also setting the counter tops this next weekend. OK, I am sure spring is just around the corner, a little warmer weather would be appreciated. We had a light volunteer turnout on Friday the 29th and Saturday the 30th. We are continuing to wrap the windows with aluminum and have just about finished them. The countertops have been delivered and should be installed by the end of this coming weekend. The back deck (stoop) needs to be finished, and the remaining flooring and trim work needs completion. On the weekend of May 6th and 7th the finishing touches were being put on. A week ago the counter tops were all placed, and the exterior aluminum wrapping on the windows was completed. This last weekend the final caulking of the windows was tackled both inside and out. So, the windows are finished. Interior doors were trimmed for the carpeting, hung, and the hardware placed. A small back door landing was completed. And forms were constructed for pouring the front porch and driveway. In the past week the subs finished the electrical and plumbing. The PJ crew continues to work on the trim. This coming weekend we will continue the finish work, but our days on this home are definitely numbered. Things are winding down on Rice Street, just as they are ramping up on Franklin! The weekend of May 14th we caulked the countertops and worked on finish trim on the Nunez home on Rice Street. The cement for the apron for the driveway and the front porch will be poured this week. Up on the “nort” side, on Franklin, the sewer and water laterals are in, and the excavation has been completed! The footings will be poured hopefully on May 16th, and then the block for the basement will be laid. On Friday the 20th and Saturday the 21st we will be landscaping, sowing grass seed, and spreading straw on Rice Street. Please bring shovels, wheelbarrows and rakes if you have them. If the opportunity presents itself we will MAY be able to begin work on the home on Franklin. If the foundation is done we might be able to place Styrofoam insulation on the exterior of the block, and possibly get the mud sill on. The work on Franklin is weather (and sub contractor) dependent. Let’s meet at the usual times (Friday 12:30 and Saturday 9:00) at the Nunez home on Rice Street. If tasks are available at the Franklin site we will divide our workers and conquer. The Nunez home on Rice Street is essentially finished!! The weekend's work almost didn't happen, but John Fahrner came through and got us the black dirt and spread it at a moment's notice, THANKS John! We had a great crew in from US Bank that manhandled the black dirt, flung the fertilizer, sowed the seed, and spread the straw. The crew was amazing. We also finished the rails for the stairs and all but finished the trim. This Friday (the 27th) the final work should be completed, and the actual closing is on June 1st. We could still use a little help Friday, so if you are in the neighborhood……………………….. On May 23rd the driveway apron and front porch was poured. The new home at 1008 Franklin is well under way. The basement is complete. Our first work date will be Saturday May 28th when we will place the insulating foam around the exterior block walls. The basement can then be backfilled, we will start on the mud sill, and we off and running. Thanks again to all of you who gave of yourselves to bring the Nunez family to their new home. I hope to see you this summer at the new site. The blueprints are finished, and the permits pulled for the next home on Third and Franklin in Stevens Point. I Plan on volunteering with us on our latest build, I guarantee you will find it rewarding and worthwhile. Stay tuned for the latest.
If you are available this summer please stop by the new project. If you are not available until the fall, fear not as we will be continuing working on that home, and beginning a second home next door. Thank you all for your tremendous support on this home, and please feel free to continue that support on our next home, and the one we hope to start in August.
