324 Second Street North
Week of August 10, 2009
The slab was poured, the plans were readied, and we laid the mud sill, framed some rough openings and put up a couple walls at 324 Second Street North on a hot Saturday……fun! Wow, our second home this year is on its way!
We worked mostly at 324 Second street this week. Saturday a great crew including a group from The Church of The Intercession. We framed walls and put the OSB sheets on. The interior lumber is being delivered Monday, so Monday, Wednesday and Saturday this week (no Friday) will be more framing…….BIG FUN!
Monday and Wednesday the gang erected the interior walls.
Monday and Wednesday the gang placed the top plates and carefully straightened the walls.
Wednesday we put up a few trusses the old fashioned way. On Friday Jim Anderson of Ellis Stone Construction donated the use of Travis and the crane. Ellis Stone has provided this service for 6 or 7 homes now, and wow……what a great help! We had all the trusses set in 2 hours and 17 minutes…..a new Habitat record, and a lot of grateful backs!! Saturday with the help of the UW-SP Campus Habitat Chapter we placed the beam for the porch and some hurricane clips on the trusses.
With the help of the usual gang and some UW-SP students from the Pharmacology Club and Positive Psychology, we worked at both 325 First Street and 324 Second Street this week. We finished the fascia, started the first bit of roof sheathing, and hung some porch trusses.
We worked on porch trusses and also sheathed most of the roof with OSB. Still planning on finishing the roof before we see snow…..got away with it this weekend anyway…….
UW-SP students were out in force with groups from Theta Xi Fraternity, Positive Psychology and the Campus Habitat Chapter, and we finished the sheeting on the porch, placed drip edge, snow and ice guard and finished putting the felt on.
We got another window in, placed some Tyvek and foam and continued working on the porch.
Remember me all funny (ha-ha) let’s get the roof on at Second street before the snow flies (been there, done that)??????
Look at the forecast lately? Geesh. So, here is the deal. The shingles are coming this Wednesday. We would like to start a little early so if people can be there 8 or 8:30 that would be grand. Then Friday at 12:30 and Saturday at 9:00 we’ll hit it and see what we can do. We can probably keep 16 or 20 people busy Friday and Saturday, so if you have the inclination….thanks.
The shingles came on Wednesday and by the end of the day well over half the roof was finished…..wow! Then Friday, working in shirt sleeves, we just about finished it up. But on Saturday that cold wind came and we moved over to First Street
Wow, it got cold out!
But that didn’t slow us down this week. We had a good group digging around the foundation to place and backfill the Insul-guard before the ground got too hard. We finished up installing windows and intently nailed the blue insulation foam to place. The blue board seams were taped as were the nailing flanges of the windows. In preparation for the soffit the F-channel was started.
This week we will continue with F-channel, J-channel, soffit, fascia and siding.
Wow, it got cold out (seems that’s how I started the last update).
But a few brave(?) die-hards decked out in arctic regalia pitched in, and we actually got quite a bit done. After clearing the nasty snow away we hung corners, starter strip and vinyl. Warming the vinyl prior to cutting it was a rather popular job.......yep, I cut a lot of vinyl ........ By noon on Saturday we got a good start.
Our work schedule at 324 Second Street North for the next couple weeks follows:

We continued with the siding this week getting the flashing on the porch, the J channel up and at least one course on all the way around the house. We also placed the front door and back door.
We had a group of Pacelli students in on Tuesday. With the help of a couple "hard cores" and a couple Board members the house looked like this when they started, and wow.....this when they finished! Thank you!
In the past week we have had a great group of volunteers working on the soffit, siding and J-channel, and blocking for the drywall.

Drywall, drywall…..drywall.
With the help of a great group from the UWSP Habitat Chapter and the UW-SP Positive Psych students we did………Dry Wall…….this weekend. We hung it, cut out windows, cut out outlets, and smoothed edges. By the time Saturday was over we had 2 ½ bedrooms done.
Yep……drywall takes a while. We are getting it, but will continue hitting it this Friday and Saturday.
Yep……the drywall saga continues. With the help of a great crew and some guidance from the ever present hard cores, we finished the garage, worked on the window returns, and taking advantage of the balmy weather, we finished up some siding on the front of the house. Assuming the relative warmth continues we still have some siding on the back. And we hope to finish up the drywalling this weekend…..or next……
The dry wall window returns were finished Friday. We still have a couple pieces to put up in the garage and the utility room. Saturday we worked, responsibly, on the soffit and facia finishing both!!
Dry wall done……check!
Vinyl and soffit done……check!
We will be checking all the dry wall screws then picking up and cleaning this weekend in preparation for the dry wall finishers to come in. After that it is doors, trim, cabinets, countertops, landscaping and butta-bing butta-boom another home finished…..wonderful!
We checked all the dry wall screws then picked up and cleaned this weekend in preparation for the dry wall finishers to come in. We will next work on trim, doors, cabinets and countertops with some landscaping thrown in for good measure.
We cleaned all the extra material and tools out of the garage on Saturday and brought in interior doors from storage. We also taped and mudded the garage. We anticipate the drywall being finished this week so next weekend we will paint and start hanging interior doors.
The dry wall is done and the house is really coming along. With the help of the UW-SP Campus Chapter and the Positive Psych students we cleaned up the floors, started painting , continued mudding the garage, and hung a few doors. Next weekend we will continue with doors and trim, progressing to cabinets and counter tops soon. In the next few weeks we will landscape both the First and Second Street homes, and in the next 6 -8 weeks we will begin our next home. Busy, Busy.
With the help of the UW-SP Students Today Alumni Tomorrow gang we got more painting done, assembled, hung and trimmed doors, picked some rock, trimmed trees and sanded and primed the garage. Wow, lots accomplished. The rest of the landscape plans took a back seat due to the great rain…..it will still be there when it dries up a bit.
With the help of the UW-SP Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow, and the Positive Psych students we hung the last of the interior doors and completed the casings, primed the garage ceiling, removed masking tape and insulation from all electrical boxes, filled most of the deeper mud holes in front of house, started baseboards and cleaned up the floors a bit, as usual, lots accomplished!
With the help of the UW-SP Sports Medicine, and Positive Psych students We finished the baseboard in the 4 bedrooms, including the closets; installed the doorstops in those rooms, did paint and stain touchup all over the house, worked on shelves, and cleaned and etched the north half of the utility room concrete, in anticipation of painting the floor. We will continue cleanup for the flooring then start with cabinets and countertops.
On Saturday we got the floors all cleaned up for the vinyl and did some more painting and puttying nail holes. This coming weekend we will start with cabinets and countertops.

We made it! Friday PM we did a little landscaping and painted the garage door jamb at 324 2nd St. Also installed the mailbox and did some final cleaning inside. Done by 3:00....a whole 2 hours early before the dedication of Amada and Armando’s home. The dedication included a blessing by Pastor Bob Carlson, quilts from Undercover Quilters, a Bible from CWHfH, three month memberships from the YMCA and the Children's museum, a flag from the Portage County Republicans, a photo gallery from Doug Henderson, and a grateful family and a group of humble, yet proud volunteers.
Our sincere thanks to all of you whose diligence, skill and hard work made the dream of another deserving Portage County family come true.
Also on Friday and on Saturday we moved over to 325 1st St and began the side yard parking work with rotten granite. We finished it Saturday and also put in some black dirt in anticipation of Master Gardeners coming in next week. Our thanks to Lensmires for a generous donation of plant materials to both houses.
Also Friday PM, the lot at 616 Wadleigh was stripped. We have a building permit, approved subcontractors, property corners located...so away we go.We worked at First and Second Street this weekend spreading dirt, pulling weeds and watching the Master Gardeners (with help from Lensmire’s) create a beautiful landscape. Thank you!
With a lot of sweat and calloused hands and some much needed mechanical help we continued spreading and grading black dirt. We will be seeding and mulching this Wednesday.
We worked Friday raking out the dirt and putting down grass seed and mulch.
